However, knowing that 90% of all goods are carried at sea, we acknowledge that seaborne transportation is a major source of pollution.
Sea transportation and storage of bulk liquid products involve many hazards. Sound principles and well implemented quality management systems are necessary to provide a safe and efficient operation. Many years before the ISM code was made mandatory, Odfjell had, as one of the first companies, obtained ISO 9000 and Safety and Environmental Protection certifications.
As a responsible employer and partner, Odfjell gives the highest priority to Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental Protection (QHSE). All our activities shall be based on a zero accident mindset, meaning that we do not accept personnel injuries, pollution or accidents as part of doing business. We shall make sure that our activities have a minimum negative impact on the environment. Quality is about doing things right the first time! A conscientious QHSE programme is in place therefore to ensure a safe working environment, low environmental risks, stable employment and long-term profitability.
Odfjell's active involvement in national and international regulatory and industry bodies and committees reflects our emphasis on contributing to the development of regulations within areas that foster sound environmental standards and a high level of safety.
Fleet
Due to our acquisition of large, energy-efficient ships, and sale of older ships, we have achieved a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions per nautical mile and dead-weight tonne. Speed and fuel consumption is systematically monitored, and any deviation is analysed and corrective measures implemented. Modern self-polishing anti-fouling paint ensures that the smoothness of the hull is well maintained between the dry-dockings. Propellers are polished during dry-dockings.
Tank Terminals
Odfjell focuses on using the best systems and technology when constructing and upgrading terminals. Tank terminals are fitted with effective pressure-control systems to prevent evaporation of gases to the air. Further, special tank bottoms with leakage detection devices and liners in the tank bays prevent ground contamination in case of accidents.
The terminals in Rotterdam, Houston and Dalian are certified in accordance with both ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001:2004. Odfjell Terminals (Houston) is also a Responsible Care(®) partner. This is recognition by the Chemical Manufacturers’ Association, of companies that have gained distinction with the petrochemical industry for their commitment to environmental standards and safety over and above current regulations.
