Addressing efficiency bottlenecks in Rotterdam

In accordance with local regulations, a veterinary inspection is required when our vessels carry Tallow into Netherland. Tallow is a rendered form of animal fat primarily made up of triglycerides, used as an ingredient in various products; food, candles, lubricants and fuel.

In the past, these veterinary inspections were only done at Masstank Botlek, Rotterdam.

“This regulation meant that our vessels needed an extra shifting to Masstank Botlek, only to carry out the veterinary inspection. A very ineffective routine that resulted in much additional shifting cost, CO2 emission and time in port. In an effort to increase port efficiency, we initiated a meeting with the Port of Rotterdam Authorities.”

The purpose of the meeting was to highlight concerns with the additional shifting connected to the veterinary inspection.

The meeting went well, and one solution was immediately implemented: The Port has added two additional berths where the veterinary inspections can be done: Vopak Terminals Vlaardingen B.V. in Rotterdam and Koole Tank storage in Amsterdam.
