In October last year, Captain Jan Edvardsen and his crew on board Bow Spring assisted in a successful search and rescue operation, saving ten fishermen from distress after their fishing boat caught fire and sank in the Pacific Ocean. As an acknowledgment of this commendable act, the Japan Coast Guard has awarded the Captain a commemorative shield and Certificate of Appreciation.
Background: Captain Jan Edvardsen and his crew volunteered to assist when contacted by the Japanese Coast Guard to take part after a Taiwanese vessel was reported on fire. From shore, Manager Marine Support, Superintendent, MSI, agent and Operator supported.
The fishing boat was in a position about five hours away from Bow Spring’s location at the time. On arrival, the boat was lost and the Japanese Coast Guard’s aircraft had not found the lifeboat in search.
A double look-out post was mounted on the Bow Spring’s bridge, including binoculars and night vision equipment. The Bridge Officer located the raft with the ten fishermen on board, and they where safely taken on board. Physically unharmed but naturally affected by the traumatic experience, the fishermen received necessary assistance, accommodation and care from our crew.
