Odfjell: Drug-free

Odfjell’s stand on the possession or use of illegal substances is clear: it is a criminal offense and therefore prohibited on board or ashore.
 

Bound by law

The Odfjell Code of Conduct states:

Odfjell requires abstinence from alcohol and other intoxicating substances in the workplace, and employees must not be influenced by such while carrying out work for Odfjell.

Moreover, SMM 171206 Drug and Alcohol states that possession and use of illegal drugs is a criminal offense, and that Odfjell will cooperate fully with relevant law enforcement bodies in cases of criminal activity.

These internal procedures are in compliance with and supportive of legislation and regulations governing the maritime industry.

Part B of the Seafarers Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Code which is annexed to the STCW Convention maintains that shipping companies must take adequate measures to prevent alcohol and drugs from impairing the ability of watchkeeping personnel.

The procedure cited, SMM 171206 Drug and Alcohol, follows the recommendation of the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF) for shipping companies to have a clearly written policy on drug and alcohol abuse that is easily understood by seafarers as well as shore-based staff. OCIMF also requires seafarers to undergo routine and unannounced drug and alcohol testing.
