Odfjell's digitalization work gains wider recognition

A national leadership award nomination and a presentation at an international maritime summit have put Odfjell’s approach to digitalization in the spotlight, highlighting the people and teamwork behind its IT efforts.

VP Corporate IT Alena K. Pedersen was named one of four finalists for the “Digitalization Leader of the Year” award presented by Atea, a leading provider of IT infrastructure and related services in the Nordic and Baltic regions. The nomination placed her alongside leaders from Aker BP, Norges Bank Investment Management, and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, reflecting recognition of Odfjell’s digitalization and AI work across industries.

The award recognizes leaders who build commitment, demonstrate courage, and turn technology into value for customers, employees, or society. For Alena, the nomination was a shared achievement.

“Digitalization is a team sport, and therefore this recognition belongs to my great colleagues at Odfjell SE and our partners,” she said.

Meanwhile, Odfjell’s practical approach to technology was also on the agenda at the Digital Ship Summit 2026 in Athens, where Manager Digital Applications Gunnar E. Eide presented the company’s data and IT strategy.

Gunnar explained the thinking behind Odfjell’s cloud-first, Microsoft-first approach: concentrating expertise on fewer platforms helps the team build competence and simplify IT support across ship and shore.

“We cannot be spread across everything. We cannot build competence on SAP, on Oracle, on Microsoft,” he said.

He also shared examples of what this approach has enabled, including using AI to complete a software improvement in two days that would normally take two weeks. Alongside the benefits, Gunnar openly addressed the limitations of relying heavily on one platform, an openness the organizers praised after his presentation.

Together, Alena's nomination and Gunnar's summit appearance highlight growing interest in how Odfjell uses technology, develops expertise, and puts AI to practical use. They also give wider visibility to the collective work of the IT team and its partners.
