Seven "she-farers" aboard Bow Sea recently took the lead in a safety session, facilitating discussions, sharing experiences, and reinforcing the importance of teamwork, open communication, and shared responsibility in maintaining safe operations at sea.

The interactive session was conducted on October 10 as part of Odfjell's Year Wheel Program. Under the command of Captain Ruffy Sabandal, the vessel's female crew members took responsibility for delivering presentations and facilitating discussions, bringing their perspectives and experiences into conversations on maritime safety.

Sharing experiences, strengthening safety

The session provided an opportunity for crew members to exchange insights, reflect on safe working practices, and discuss the importance of recognizing and preventing risks in everyday shipboard operations.

With the female crew members leading the activity, the discussions also demonstrated the value of involving seafarers from different roles and levels of experience. Their participation reinforced how open communication and the willingness to share observations contribute to a working environment where safety remains everyone's responsibility.

As the women seafarers collectively expressed:
"Safety is everyone's responsibility. Every observation, voice, and contribution matters in preventing risks and keeping our ship safe."

Taking the lead, making a contribution

Beyond the discussions on safety, the activity also highlighted the contributions of women in maritime operations and the importance of providing opportunities for every crew member to take an active role.

"With women still underrepresented in the maritime industry, initiatives such as this demonstrate how participation and shared responsibilities can help create a more inclusive working environment. The session gave the female crew members an opportunity to share their knowledge, guide conversations, and contribute to the vessel's ongoing focus on safety," OS Nicole Canindo said.

"For the crew of Bow Sea, the activity reinforced an important principle: maintaining safe operations depends on everyone on board, regardless of rank or gender. Through open dialogue, shared experiences, and mutual respect, every crew member has a part to play in strengthening safety at sea," she added.
