Mexico implements national ban on vapes and e-cigarettes

According to port authorities, the ban covers all types of electronic smoking and vaping devices, including:

• disposable vapes
• refillable devices
• pods and cartridges
• non-nicotine e-cigarettes
   

Anyone caught violating the ban may face:

• confiscation of the device
• fines of up to USD 12,500
• possible imprisonment

​This prohibition is part of Mexico’s expanded tobacco control program following its 2023 reforms, which already banned smoking in public places and prohibited tobacco advertising and promotion. The stricter rules also align with World Health Organization (WHO) concerns about the growing use of vaping products.

The ban has direct implications for maritime operations in Mexican ports. Shipping companies, manning agencies, and crew managers are strongly advised to brief crews before arrival to prevent legal issues and operational delays.
