Recruiting the next generation of seafarers, building long-term maritime careers, and creating a safe and healthy working environment at sea were among the topics on the agenda when Odfjell colleagues took part in Maritime Week in Haugesund.

Maritime Week brings together Norwegian authorities, shipping companies, seafarers, and other maritime organizations for discussions on safety, competence, and the future of the industry.

Manager Crewing Eva Storeide joined the session From interest to career.

With applications to maritime education on the rise, the discussion focused on an important next step: How can the industry turn growing interest into apprenticeships, jobs and, ultimately, long careers at sea?

Together with representatives from across the maritime industry and young seafarers at different stages of their careers, Eva shared perspectives from Odfjell’s work with recruitment and follow-up of new talent.

The session also explored how structured guidance and mentoring can help make the transition from education to working life safer and more successful.

Eva continued to walk the talk, going straight from the stage to Odfjell to nautical students at the HVL Campus Haugesund. Odfjell hires four students from the school’s integrated practice program.

Keys to a healthy working environment on board

Captain Lise Henriksen brought the onboard perspective to two sessions. Her presentations put the spotlight on health and safety at sea and the realities faced by leaders and crews in their everyday working environment.

Workplace accommodation is not about lowering expectations; it’s about giving people the right conditions to succeed
Leadership on board is not just about getting the work done but about getting people to thrive together
Trust is vital for learning and makes it easier to ask questions and notify about risks
Proactive measures can prevent injuries, conflicts and errors. Even smaller adjustments can have big effects
A healthy psychosocial environment increases efficiency and safety
Safety + Wellbeing + Sense of achievement = Better work environment = improved HSE

Lise also joined a live debate hosted by Fiskeribladet/IntraFish and the Norwegian Maritime Authority, alongside representatives from across the industry. The conversation covered several current safety and working-environment topics, including bullying and harassment, accident statistics and how new technology is changing maritime operations.
