What is obesity?
Obesity means having too much body fat to the point that it affects your health. It is commonly measured using Body Mass Index or BMI.
- A BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese.
- A BMI of 40 or higher is classified as severe obesity.
Beyond the numbers, excess weight can make daily tasks more tiring, lower stamina, strain the joints, and increase the risk of serious diseases over time.
What causes obesity?
Weight gain usually happens gradually. It is often the result of several factors combined:
- Eating more calories than the body burns, especially from sugary drinks, fried foods, and large portions
- Limited physical activity, such as long hours sitting or reduced movement during the day
- Genetics, as some people naturally store fat more easily
- Lifestyle habits such as stress, lack of sleep, and emotional eating
Why it matters
Obesity increases the risk of:
- Heart disease
- Type 2 diabetes
- High blood pressure
- Joint and back pain
- Sleep problems
Aside from these, it can also affect confidence and mental well-being.
Managing and preventing obesity
The goal is not extreme dieting. The focus should be on building sustainable, healthy habits.
- Eat smarter
- Cut back on sugary and fatty foods
- Choose more vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean protein
- Watch portion sizes
- Drink plenty of water
- Move more and do some cardio and strength exercises
- Get support from those around you
