On Bow Odyssey, the crew participated in the Buddy System campaign, introduced in June 2025 as part of ItM 2511. The program is structured around three learning modules: Impactful Instructions, Decisive Decisions, and Friendly Feedback. It involves all crew members pairing up to share responsibility for safety.
While the system applies to everyone, it places particular focus on trainees and cadets, who are paired with more experienced colleagues to strengthen supervision, learning, and safe practices. This reflects a principle we hold close: safety is a collective responsibility that grows stronger when we look out for one another.
HSE Manager Arve Matland explains: “The Buddy System was initiated with particular focus on our youngest and most inexperienced seafarers. However, to build a solid foundation and involve all crew in the system, we launched three learning modules which are now being completed onboard. The next step is to fine tune our procedures to ensure the Buddy System is implemented as a uniform standard across all our vessels.”
Meanwhile, on Bow Cardinal, MSI Trevor Keith Northage conducted a crash refresher course on Task Risk Assessment (TRA) during his recent vessel visit. The session revisited the fundamentals of hazard identification, risk evaluation, and control measures, with active participation from the crew.
Captain Engelbert Manaeg shared that the refresher provided valuable hands-on learning and reinforced the crew’s sense of ownership in maintaining safe work practices.
