Navigating Safety in the Digital Age: A Reflection from OS Genetializa of Bow Fagus

For Ordinary Seaman Jeamuel Genetializa of Bow Fagus, this year’s Global Safety Day was a chance to reflect on both the opportunities and the risks that come with rapid technological change, and to remind fellow crew that while innovation is powerful, staying in control matters most. Read his reflection below:

As we move further into the digital era, also known as the Information Age, we cannot ignore the rapid advancements shaping nearly every aspect of human life — from communication and work to entertainment and healthcare.

This year’s Global Safety Day, themed "Revolutionizing Health and Safety: The Role of AI and Digitalization at Work", explored the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) across various industries, with a particular focus on the seafaring sector.

The maritime industry, once reliant solely on manual operations and human expertise, is now embracing the improvements AI brings to ship operations and crew management.

However, like any powerful tool, AI presents its own set of challenges, especially when it comes to safety, security, and health.

While the benefits are undeniable, it is just as important to recognize and address the potential risks.

Held on May 14, 2025, the Global Safety Day event aboard Bow Fagus was both informative and thought-provoking. The discussion raised awareness among the crew about the possible downsides of AI — not only in terms of operations and company security but more importantly, its effect on individual health and well-being.

By the end of the event, the crew had the opportunity to reflect on their current engagement with AI, gaining a clearer understanding of its risks and how to use it more safely, efficiently, and responsibly. The session concluded with a powerful and empowering reminder:

“I’ve got the power over AI, and not AI over me.”
